DURHAM REGION 407 UPDATE
According to Ministry spokeswoman Diane Naluzny the “407 East Development Group is still working towards completing the construction in order that the ministry can open the highway in the spring.”
An exact date wasn’t provided – but the opening of Hwy 407 east of Brock Road in Pickering is still slated to open in the coming months.
The 407 extension was originally supposed to open in December of 2015 but was pushed back. The first phase extends the toll highway from Brock Road in Pickering to Harmony Road in Oshawa and also includes the first of two “links” that will run between highway 407 and highway 401 and parallel to Lakeridge Road.
The second phase, opening in 2020, will extend the 407 highway from Harmony Road in Oshawa out to Highway 35/115 and include the second link in Clarington near Holt Road.
When the delay was originally announced, Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca made the following statement in a letter to local officials;
“Outstanding work that remains includes top coat asphalt and permanent pavement markings in some sections, final stages of bridge construction at some locations, and final safety reviews, Some of the outstanding work is temperature sensitive and cannot be completed in the winter months”
For most Durham Region residents it’s been almost impossible to not notice the massive amounts of construction and progress that have been made over the last two years on this project. With the addition of the 407 East we are anticipating further growth in Durham and an even stronger real estate market than we saw in 2015. While for some the loss of green space and farmland will be bitter sweet, the benefits of this highway and it’s ease of access to the 401 and the rest of the G.T.A will have untold benefits for our community.
